Abducted NECO Candidates Wrote Exams at ‘Miracle Centre’ – Kogi Govt
Nigerianeye · Jul 16, 2026
The Kogi State Government has revealed that two of the National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates abducted during Tuesday’s attack on Government Secondary School, Olowa, in Dekina Local Government Area, sat for their examinations at an unauthorised “miracle centre.” The government stated that it has launched a major multi-agency security operation, personally ordered by Governor Usman Ododo, to rescue the four remaining victims still in captivity. The operation is being coordinated by the State Security Adviser, retired Commander Jerry Omodara, involving the Nigerian Army, Police, Department of State Services, Kogi State Vigilante Service, local hunters, and other security networks. Advanced technology is also being deployed, with reports indicating encouraging progress. Those still held include the school Principal, Elder Daniel Iyanaa; a NECO official, Solomon Audu; and two female candidates, Dorcas Sunday and another identified simply as Dorcas.According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, five people were initially abducted, but one victim has already been rescued. Preliminary investigations showed that the examination centre was in a remote, vulnerable location and was allegedly operating as a “miracle centre” for external candidates. The two abducted female students were not regular pupils of Government Secondary School, Olowa, and the arrangements reportedly fell short of the state’s established security protocols for protecting NECO candidates. Despite these findings, the government emphasised its commitment to securing the safe release of all victims.“The victims are our people, and the government will spare no effort in ensuring their safe rescue and the arrest of those responsible for the crime,” Fanwo said. The statement urged residents of Olowa and surrounding communities to cooperate with security forces by providing useful information while operations continue. Further details on the rescue mission are being withheld to avoid compromising it. The incident occurred when gunmen stormed the school during the ongoing NECO examinations, abducting the principal, a NECO ad hoc staff member, and four students. The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of one student and ongoing efforts to free the others and apprehend the perpetrators.
